Types of drinks:
- Distilled drinks/liquors/spirits: Vodka/ Tequila/ Rum/ Gin/ Brandy/ Whisky/ Soju (I have been quite a fan of Korean Soju. It's a shame that I haven't try any Japanese Soju yet.)
But if, by any chance, you guys visit Switzerland, please try the local wine at least once. You can't miss it. It's so nice! And, because Swiss wines are not for export, you can hardly get it from anywhere else in the world.
Types of bars:
Types of Cocktails:
- Highball:It’s very suitable for you to order when there is no seat in the pub. You can simply have it with your friend, standing and chatting casually. (usually, Vodka+soda+ice)
- Cuba Libre/ Rum and Coke: A kind of Highball cocktail, and sometimes, bartenders put lime juice in it. It is very classic but not really impressive, and it should not be too expensive. (Rum+Coke)
- Old-fashioned: Usually, each bar has it own special recipe for Old-fashioned, so it is always worthwhile to try it when you don’t know what to order and want to know the level of a bar. (Whisky+muddling sugar+bitters)
- Vodka Cranberry: Sweet.(Vodka+Cranberry juice)
- Sea Breeze: A good Sea Breeze follows a delicate balance of alcohol, sweetness, fruitiness and slight sourness, very nice for summer days. (Vodka+cranberry juice+grapefruit juice)
- Gin and Tonic: Tonic (Quinine为主的汽水类饮料) itself is so bitter. Though Gin is mixed with Tonic, the bitterness is still strong, and the overall flavor intensity is quite impressive. (Gin+Tonic)
- Jack and Coke/Whisky and Coke: Jack here refers to Jake Daniels, a Whisky brand. (Whisky+Coke)
- Vodka and OJ: OJ here refers to orange juice. Be careful when you order it as you can easily get drunk before you know it. (Vodka+orange juice)
- Margarita: Though it’s a quite well-known one, it can be tricky when you order it. There are three different types of Margarita: Margarita on the rocks(直接加冰块), Margarita straight up (冰镇过,但不加冰), Margarita blended (有点像奶昔,也叫Frozen Margarita). For example, when you go to a bar, you can order like this: I want Margarita, served up. (Tequila+orange liquor+lime juice)
- Cadillac: A kind of Margarita, stronger than usual ones, but very tasty. (Tequila+lime juice+Agave syrup+Grand Marnier, a kind of orange liquor consisting of brandy and orange)
- Martini: It is a famous type of cocktail, but actually it can be very confusing when you are ordering it.
- Ice: “I want a Martini, up” or “I want a Martini on the rocks” (see details in the Margarita part. Plus, when you order Martini on the rocks, you’d better finish it before the ice melts too much for better taste.)
- A twist: “I want a Martini with a twist” (a twist refers to a piece of lemon peel as some garnish.)
- Dry Martini: with a splash of olive brine or olive juice, usually garnished with an olive.
- Perfect Martini: contains equal amounts of sweet and dry vermouth.
- Gin or Vodka: Sometimes the bartender would ask you which you would like to choose as the base, Gin or Vodka. I would prefer Gin.
- Lemon drop: A Vodka-based cocktail with lemony and sweet flavor. Also, it is a variant of the Vodka Martini. (Vodka+lemon juice+Triple sec+simple syrup)
- Cosmopolitan: Sweet. (Vodka+Triple sec, Cranberry juice+lime juice)
- Manhattan: Bitter. (Whisky, usually Rye Whisky+ Bitters+ Vermouth)
- Bloody Mary: As I don’t like tomato juice, personally I never tried it. (Vodka+tomato juice)
- Mojito: Very common choice which you can always go for it when you have no idea about what to order. (Rum+soda+mint+sugar+lime juice)
Shots/ Shooters or Slammers:
When you order shots or slammers, you are expected to finish each cup quickly in a single gulp. When there is some salt on the edge of a shot glass, you can lick a salt and drink the spirits in it. By the way, be careful when you order shots. You may get blacked out easily in seconds.
